Susan grew up in Charlottesville and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Commerce. During her four years at UVA, she served as a Manager for the Men’s Basketball Team under Terry Holland. Susan learned much from this experience, but one meaningful skill was the need to look outside the box to solve problems.
Susan gained valuable experience working at KPMG for over fourteen years. As a Senior Manager in both their Tax and Personal Financial Planning Practices, she provided tax planning, personal financial planning, and tax preparation services to individuals, trusts, estate and businesses. During this time, she received a Masters in Taxation degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and qualified for the AICPA Personal Financial Specialist designation.
In 2002, she started a CPA firm specializing in tax, financial planning and trust and estate administration, originally known as Norfleet, Musselman & Company, now Heartwood Tax Consultants. Over the years, she has served as Executor and Trustee for many clients.
Susan and her husband, Alan, live in Bon Air with their son, Jason, who is studying architecture at Virginia Tech. Their daughter, Kelly, graduated from the University of Virginia and is working in Northern Virginia.
Allene moved from her hometown of Syracuse, NY to Richmond shortly after graduating Magna Cum Laude from Lake Erie College, where she double majored in Accounting and Equestrian Studies. She gained valuable experience in client service while working at a regional accounting firm before joining KPMG’s audit department, and then moving out to serve as Assistant Controller at a former audit client.
After taking a few years off to parent young children Allene joined Susan in her newly established firm known as Norfleet, Musselman & Company. Allene role has expanded over the now 20 years she has been serving as a tax professional to include service to all of the firm’s estate and trust clients and all gift tax and estate tax return preparation. In addition to these particular areas of expertise, Allene is experienced in all areas of individual income tax planning and preparation and has assisted many families in dealing with filing requirements and transfer of wealth planning resulting from a spouse or parent’s death.
The thing that continues to energize Allene to bring her very best effort to work each day is the opportunity to provide support, sound financial and tax council, and a solution to the stress and anxiety experienced by many surrounding financial decisions and tax matters.
Allene and her husband Doug live in Richmond’s West End. Allene is an avid horsewoman, delights in time spent with family and friends, and is an active covenant partner in Third Church, where she has served in many leadership roles over the years.
Lesley grew up in Northern Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Commerce, concentration in Accounting. Lesley began her professional career with Deloitte & Touche in Washington, D.C., where she served both publicly-held and privately-held businesses, as well as high-net-worth individuals. Lesley also served on the Firm’s U.S. Tax Desk in Sydney, Australia and was a member of Deloitte’s Washington National Tax Office, where she acted as a technical resource to the Firm’s U.S. practice offices on a wide variety of tax issues. During her time with Deloitte, Lesley gained valuable experience in tax compliance, planning, research, and tax controversy services. Lesley obtained her M.S. in Taxation from American University while working in D.C.
After relocating to the Richmond area and taking a break from her career to focus on her family and young children, Lesley was connected to Susan Norfleet through a mutual friend, and returned to the accounting world. During her time with Susan at Norfleet, Musselman & Company, Lesley has provided tax compliance and planning services to a wide variety of clients, and has acted as a resource for tax research and other technical issues. Lesley believes that excellent client service is the result of a working relationship built on trust, honesty, and a thorough understanding of her clients’ needs, and is grateful for the opportunity to provide that level of service to the clients of Heartwood Tax Consultants.
Lesley and her husband Curtis live in Midlothian with their daughters Abigail and Madeline, and their rescue beagle Scotch. Lesley enjoys working in her yard, cheering her kids on from the sidelines, spending time with her family in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and attending UVA sporting events (Go ‘Hoos!).
Laura grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Having lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for several years as a child, she still enjoys speaking Spanish when the opportunity arises. Laura worked in Washington, DC for nine years at two economic consulting companies before moving to Richmond. She then spent several years away from the workplace until her children started school.
During her twenty years at Norfleet, Musselman and Company (now Heartwood Tax) Laura initially served an administrative role but has now expanded her duties to include tax return preparation. Her many years of exposure to the tax business served as a good basis, but she has also taken preparation classes and continues to benefit from her coworkers’ vast knowledge and experience.
Laura and her husband Doug live in the West End with their two lively kittens. Their son Garrett is pursuing a Master’s degree in public policy, and daughter Bethany is a music teacher in Arlington County, VA. Laura loves traveling, experiencing world cultures and the beauty of nature. She also loves solving word puzzles and watching Jeopardy.
Carrie is a Richmond native and graduated from Clemson University in 2006 with a BS in Corporate Finance and a minor in Accounting. Carrie brings over 10 years of industry experience to the team, including 7 years in wealth management and over 3 years in accounting and tax.
Carrie began her career in financial services right out of college. In this industry, she has really enjoyed the high-energy environment as well as assisting clients build their financial wealth. In 2019 Carrie was given the opportunity to work in the accounting field and immediately fell in love with it. Her passion led her to pursue the CPA licensure and further her career in tax consulting.
With her unique experience in both financial services and tax, Carrie partners with clients to understand their full financial picture and both short-term and long-term goals. She strives to educate them on next steps and answer any questions to ensure a mutual understanding of their situation. She values building client relationships based on trust, transparency and catering to each client’s individual needs.
In her free time Carrie enjoys running, vacationing at Lake Gaston and following her alma mater’s football team. She and her husband James reside in Short Pump with their son Noah and also Dabo, their Jack Russell Terrier.
Rylee grew up in Smithfield, VA and relocated to Goochland after her husband took a full-time job with the ministry, YoungLife. Before she relocated, she graduated from Regent University in Virginia Beach where she majored in International Studies.
After moving to Goochland, Rylee worked in a variety of coffee jobs while applying to several jobs in her degree field. She became the assistant manager at Dunkin Donuts where she became experienced with inventory, balancing the register, and having excellent customer service. In this process, she was connected with Susan through a church member at West End Presbyterian. Susan hired her as an administrative assistant, which helps with scanning documents, organizing tax workpapers, and processing returns so they can be sent out to clients. Currently, she is pursuing a business certificate in small business and entrepreneurship and taking QuickBooks classes to gain more knowledge.
Rylee and her husband Brandon live in Goochland with their two dogs, Cash and Scooby. Even though, they don’t have kids of their own, they still have plenty around due to the ministry of YoungLife. Rylee loves to travel, build relationships with new friends, and prioritizes that no one leaves her house hungry.
Kim relocated from Matamoras, PA to Norfolk, VA in 2017 to be closer to her children. Worked for several years in a family‐owned tax preparation business before taking over ownership and operation in 2006.
Owned and operated a successful Tax Preparation business that served mainly the Tri‐State area of NY, NJ & PA for 11 years.
Has 35+ years of practical experience preparing Individual and Small Business Tax Returns.
Kim started with Norfleet, Musselman and Company in 2019.
She likes working with numbers in both the tax and bookkeeping sides of compiling returns.
Kim lives with her daughter and grandson in Petersburg.
